LGBTQIA+ INTERSEX SOLIDARITY DAY

WHAT DOES INTERSEX MEAN ?
Intersex refers to individuals who are born with physical sex characteristics (such as chromosomes, hormones, or genitalia) that do not fit typical definitions of male or female bodies. This can include a range of variations in reproductive anatomy or secondary sex characteristics. It is important to understand that being intersex is a natural variation in human biology, much like differences in height or eye colour, and it is not a medical condition that requires treatment unless there are health concerns.
WHY NOVEMBER 8 ?
Intersex Solidarity Day is observed on November 8th in honour of the birthday of Herculine Barbin, a French intersex person whose memoirs became widely known. Barbin lived during the 19th century and was assigned female at birth but later transitioned to live as a male. Barbin's writings shed light on the social and medical challenges intersex individuals faced during that time, and they continue to influence discussions around intersex rights today.
THE PURPOSE OF INTERSEX SOLIDARITY DAY:
RAISE AWARENESS:
The day aims to educate the public about intersex individuals and the issues they face, including medical interventions, stigma, and lack of legal recognition. Many people are unaware of intersex issues, so the day promotes understanding and acceptance.
ADVOCATE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS:
It highlights the need to protect the rights of intersex people, especially regarding bodily autonomy and consent. Many intersex individuals face unnecessary surgeries or medical interventions in infancy or childhood to "normalize" their bodies, often without their consent, which can lead to physical and psychological harm.
